Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument (Part 1), Arizona
Sunday, 9. April 2023
This national monument is one of our favorite places in the southwest. Always greener than many other parts of the Sonoran Desert and the otherworldly vegetation makes wandering through this landscape a surreal experience. It almost feels like Carlos Castaneda’s Don Juan might sit behind the next cactus or rock …
The national monument area is quite large and in my humble opinion more beautiful than some national parks. We were here a few times before and decided to stay again a week since we were already in the Tucson area for the desert flower superbloom. And of course we didn’t get disappointed. The puerto blanco drive - a 40ish mile loop on a rough dirt road - provided great views and many blooming wild flowers. Unfortunately, the other spectacular loop (Ajo Mountain Drive) was closed while we were there.
