Always greener than many other parts of the Sonoran Desert and the otherworldly vegetation makes wandering through this landscape a surreal experience. The national monument area is quite large and in my humble opinion more beautiful than some national parks. We were here a few times before and decided to stay again a week since we were already in the Tucson area for the desert flower superbloom. And of course we didn’t get disappointed. The puerto blanco drive - a 40ish mile loop on a rough dirt road - provided great views and many blooming wild flowers. Unfortunately, the other spectacular loop (Ajo Mountain Drive) was closed while we were there.
